    How to recognize caries in a child at an early stage

    Teaching a young child to take daily care of their teeth is very difficult, and protecting them from sweets is an almost impossible task. Not surprisingly, dental caries is one of the most common infectious diseases encountered in pediatric dentistry.

    Detecting caries at an early stage is quite difficult, but knowing its first signs with a careful examination of children’s teeth is still possible. The task of parents is not to miss the moment and detect the disease as early as possible.

    Caries in children: stages and symptoms

    • The initial stage is characterized by small spots on the enamel. At first they are very light, but over time they darken and become visually identifiable.
    • Superficial caries is characterized by minor and shallow destruction of enamel. The child also complains of pain when eating cold or hot food, drinking, acidic foods.
    • Moderate caries is easily determined – a carious cavity is visible on the surface. It occurs in place of the previously formed spots. At this stage, the pain becomes more intense.
    • Deep caries is the last stage. All tissues are affected, down to the dentin. In the absence of treatment, bone tissue may be destroyed and the pulp may become inflamed.
