    Orthodontic Appliances: what are they and how do they help?

    Orthodontic appliances are not prosthetics, as they don’t replace missing teeth. Instead, they are used to treat various bite issues, such as tooth crowding, mandibular retraction, or gaps between teeth. An important element of such correction is an individually selected device for a specific case.

    At Sapphire Dental Clinic, our experienced specialists perform a thorough examination before recommending either a removable or fixed appliance, depending on the patient’s age and orthodontic condition.

    Removable orthodontic appliances

    In orthodontics, removable models are used that the patient can remove and put on by themselves. They are worn according to the doctor’s instructions, usually from 12 to 20 hours a day.
    Children who still have baby teeth are the most likely to wear them. Between the ages of six and twelve, the jaws begin to grow actively. Orthodontic pathologies may occur due to uneven development of the upper and lower jaw, the molars may lack space or gaps may appear between them. These processes must be diagnosed in time to prevent their development.

    Biteplate

    The most popular and effective removable appliance is the biteplate — a functional monoblock system.

    Advantages of this appliance:

    • can be removed by the patient when necessary;
    • relatively affordable;
    • easy to clean and maintain;
    • quick repair if damaged.

    Orthodontic plates are made using an impression taken by the dentist. Children grow rapidly and their jaws change fast. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically make a new impression and install a new structure.

    Fixed Orthodontic Appliances

    Fixed appliances are recommended for children to treat:

    • lack of space for upper or lower incisors;
    • narrow upper dental arch;
    • difficulty with nasal breathing.

    It cannot be removed on its own and remains on the teeth throughout the treatment process. It consists of a small plastic base, screws, brackets, wires and rings that are attached to the teeth. The system works by creating an appropriate level of pressure on the teeth and thus straightens them. It is worn for one to two years to achieve the desired effect.
